2012 Vintage -- One the Michigan based Founders Brewing Company's strongest ales, Breakfast Stout clocks in at an ABV of 8.3%, 60 IBUs, and is available from September thru March. This is a coffee lover's beer; it's brewed with flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and Sumatra and Kona coffee. Breakfast Stout debuted on September 1, 2010, and has become a favorite among Founders fans. This Imperial Stout has a frothy, cinnamon-colored head and an aroma of rich grains and fresh espresso, (coffee is also the first flavor you'll taste), and pours out a dark brown, almost black. The flavor is well balanced, with a malty sweetness and slight vanilla leveling out the coffee and dark chocolate tones; the strong alcohol content is well masked, and there's a moderate carbonation which creates a full bodied stout. The "booziness" comes more in the aftertaste, which brings along a little cashew flavor. Truly, this is a thick stout you can enjoy in a growler or "on a plate with a fork," as Founders suggests.
