Raison D'etre is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale from Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, brewed with beet sugar, raisins and Belgian-style yeast. This Raison D'etre is 8.00% ABV, and has been available year-round since 1998 in bottles and growlers, and on-tap. This dark ale pours out a foggy ruby red color with half an inch of frothy off-white head that retains well. The nose of Raison D'etre is sweet, with hints of beet sugar, raisins, and butterscotch. The taste follows suit, with flavors of molasses, spices, booze and dark fruits. This reason for existing is a lighter bodied ale, with smooth, creamy carbonation and a boozy, molasses finish. Raison D'etre is best enjoyed out of a snifter, tulip, goblet, chalice, or oversized wine glass, at around 45-50 degrees F. This beer's higher ABV and fruit component make it a good beer to store in your cellar for a few years, it ages nicely. Try pairing it with barbecue, sharp and pungent cheeses, beef or meat dishes.
