Ballast Point Brewing Company's Sculpin is a friendly sort of American IPA, with an agreeable 7% alcohol by volume. This IPA debuted in 2005, and was originally called Northstar IPA. With 70 IBUs and a full figured taste, Sculpin won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup 2010 in the International Pale Ale category. The ale pours out a hazy gold color with a half inch high head of ivory foam that resolves down to pleasant patches and rings. The nose offers a bouquet of fruits: apricot, grapefruit, and mango, which are balanced by a pine and earth quality, with faint spices. The taste of this spiky fish (found in deeper ocean waters) matches its nose, with apricot, peach, mango and lemon all present. These sweet tastes are followed by cut grass earthen hops, pine, and herbal spices, finishing with a satisfying tangy spice. Sculpin is available on a rotating schedule in bottles, growlers, casks, and on-tap. Try this IPA in a pint glass or mug.
