California's Anderson Valley Brewing Company is a popular brewery (and valley), microbrewing dozens of different ales. Their Oatmeal Stout is a 5.7% Stout beer that's available year-round in bottles, growlers, cans, and on-tap. Best sipped from a pint glass, mug, or stein, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout pours out a deep, dark brown with a two inch high beige head. The foamy head sticks around and leaves lots of lacing on the glass. Barney Flats' nose offers aromas of roasted grains, oatmeal, coffee, caramel, chocolate, an earthiness, and hints of dark fruits. This stout beer tastes of milky chocolate, coffee, cream, oats, and lightly roasted dark grains, which open to a low bitterness, and more coffee and chocolate at the finish. This beer has a medium body, strong carbonation, and a silky, smooth mouthfeel. One of the thickest stouts on the market, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout pairs well with earthy cheeses (Camembert, Fontina), smoked meats, chocolate, shellfish, and desserts.
