2013 Vintage - Southern Tier Choklat is the brewery's American Double/Imperial Stout ale; it's a tribute to xocoatl, the gift of the Mayans-today, we call this treat chocolate. Choklat (which is how xocoatl is pronounced) is brewed with dark, bittersweet chocolate, and it shows; the beer pours out jet black with a frothy mocha head that laces the glass. The nose of this 10% ABV Imperial Stout is of dark chocolate, vanilla, espresso, roasted malts, and a light bitterness. Choklat tastes like it smells: smooth and dark cocoa, espresso notes, moderate hops, leading to a slightly alcohol-bitter finish. This stout has a full body with light carbonation, and a pleasant coffee aftertaste. Imperial Stouts can stand up to big dinners; pair Choklat with smoked meat, grilled meat, or game, or with chocolate for a fine dessert. Southern Tier Choklat is available on a rotating schedule in bottles, growlers, and on-tap; try it in a pint glass at 50-55F.
