Orval is the Belgian Pale Ale (and only ale) brewed by the Orval Trappist Brewery in Belgium. The Trappist monks dry-hop Orval, and between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional ping process which creates a hop heavy profile. The average ABV of Orval is 6.20% ABV, and it's available year-round in bottles and on-tap. Orval pours out a rich copper-orange with a dense ivory head that laces. The nose offers honey, honey, banana, grains, some pepper, candy, tropical fruit, and traces of Belgian yeast funk. The taste of this ale is of bitter hops, trailing into honey sweetness and funky yeast at the finish. This is a medium-bodied, creamy and smooth mouthfeel with perky carbonation. Orval sips well from a snifter, tulip, or oversized wine glass at 40-45 degrees F. Orval pairs well with Thai food, tangy cheeses, salads, and fish dinners.
